Academic programs

Through partnerships with international organizations

CEID Colombia offers the following capacity-building programs designed or students, teachers, and public and private sector professionals.

Principles of Compliance and Enforcement of Environmental Law (Program made by the EPA - Protection Agency, USA):

The course on Principles of Compliance and Enforcement of Environmental Law, was developed to support environmental protection authorities and professionals from different countries; design and implement compliance strategies and programs for law enforcement; develop networks for cooperation; and strengthen capacity to implement environmental requirements. It promotes the use of regulatory and non-regulatory approaches to increase compliance with and enforcement of environmental laws and regulations that promote the sustainable use of natural resources and the protection of ecosystem integrity at the global, regional and national levels. This program is aimed at anyone involved in the development or implementation of environmental programs, including government officials, non-government executives, academic and industry leaders, and citizens in general.

Compliance and Enforcement of Multilateral Environmental Agreements - MEAs (program from the Academy of Environmental Law of the International Union for Conservation of Nature IUCN):

This course on compliance and enforcement of MEAs was designed by the IUCN and UNEP. It is designed to provide students with practical skills for negotiating, implementing and improving compliance with national and international environmental laws. The course focuses in 10 main agreements, including Rio Convention agreements on biodiversity, chemicals, and waste. It is designed for students of environmental law, international relations, environmental management and environmental careers in general.

Training The Teachers (TTT) Program (program from the Academy of Environmental Law of the International Union for Conservation of Nature IUCN):

Through its partnership with the Academy of Environmental Law (IUCN), CEID runs the Training The Teachers (TTT) Program in Colombia. This program is designed to improve local capacity for teaching environmental law. The course is made up of two units:
- Basic course – TTT 1: For professors that have never lectured in environmental law.
- Advances course – TTT 2: For professors that have experience in environmental law so they can strengthen their knowledge, and gain the ability to tutor other teachers.

The greatest benefit of this program is to strengthen the capacity of the academic institutions and provide high quality education programs in the field of environmental law.

Carbon Footprint / PAS 2050 / ISO 14064

The carbon footprint is the amount of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) emitted during the life cycle of a product, service or specific activity. It is expressed in tons of CO2 equivalent. These GHGs are emitted by energy use, transportation (air and highway), waste generation, and paper consumption, among others.

Our method of quantifying the carbon footprint is based on the guidelines provided by the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) and is verifiable under ISO 14064 (corporate inventories and emissions reductions projects).
Estimating the Carbon Footprint of a company or a business has become an important way to make the public aware of that company's environmental and social commitment. It is an opportunity to quantify production, provide substantial savings opportunities, and improve the efficiency of processes. It is also a gateway to new business trends and ventures, influencing buyer decisions towards your products and services.

The emissions revealed by calculating a company's carbon footprint can be offset through mitigation actions, such as planting trees or contributing to the conservation of natural forests. Plants and trees neutralize the impact of emissions by capturing CO2 during photosynthesis.
Such a commitment also helps improve and upgrade a company to international and regional standards of competitiveness and environmental sustainability.

Projects to Reduce GHG Emissions

The Kyoto Protocol is an international agreement that aims to stabilize the Earth's atmosphere by controlling the concentration of greenhouse gases, which are emitted by human activities and indeed accelerate global warming. The protocol was ratified at the conference of the parties (COP 18) in Doha (2012), Dakar and remains in force until 2020.
